This sprawling estate, that was once a private residence, has a rich history dating back to the early 1900s. The original owner of the property was Sir John Maxwell, who was a prominent businessman in Johannesburg. He built a house on the property in 1930, which was named Fairlawns. In the 1980’s, the Oppenheimer family acquired the adjacent property, which was originally known as Westcliff Farm, and incorporated it into their extensive portfolio of properties in Johannesburg. The property was later sold to the Thacker family, who subsequently converted turned it into a boutique hotel in 1997. Since then Fairlawns has undergone significant expansions with the addition of new buildings and amenities that make our estate an oasis of luxury and tranquility.
Fairlawns has won numerous awards over the years. We are overjoyed to announce that we have been nominated for the prestigious CONDE NASTE READERS CHOICE AWARDS 2023. The voting period ends on 30th June 2023 and we invite you to cast your vote. We sincerely appreciate your support in our pursuit of excellence. Please cast your vote here:
With colder temperatures and shorter days, the dynamic team in the kitchen are inspired to create menus that are both comforting and innovative, experimenting with hearty ingredients, warming spices, and cosy dishes that evoke feelings of warmth and comfort.
A preview of our Winter menu includes hearty beef bourgeon soup braised with a touch of burgundy wine and slowly braised for 24 hours using a traditional stew recipe but served as a soup. A popular main course dish is a rich pumpkin risotto enriched with a hard Italian style cheese and slightly scented with cinnamon and cardamom. For the more adventurous foodies try our in house aged duck breast with a strudel of savoy cabbage, wild mushrooms and duck leg confit.
